LOCKHART, Texas — The Austin Community College District (ACC) has announced the purchase of the historic Ford building in downtown Lockhart as part of its plans to establish a permanent campus to address the area’s growing workforce needs.
Located on San Antonio Street, the approximately 20,000-square-foot building, a former auto dealership, will provide space for classrooms and hands-on learning facilities. The facility will also allow for future expansions to accommodate the region’s evolving demands over the next decade, ACC officials said.
“This historic building represents not only a physical space but our commitment to the Lockhart community,” said ACC Chancellor Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart. “The Ford building’s central location and rich history make it the ideal home for ACC Lockhart, where students can pursue their dreams while staying connected to their community.”
The purchase offers a quicker path to creating a functional campus compared to developing vacant land, Lowery-Hart said. Plans for renovations and build-out are set to begin immediately.
In November, Lockhart Independent School District voters approved a special annexation ballot item to join the ACC District. The annexation allows residents to access in-district tuition rates and services, including free tutoring, career counseling, and specialized programs.
ACC officials said they are collaborating with the community and local school districts to ensure the facility meets workforce and educational needs. New industries moving into the area underscore the importance of aligning offerings with Lockhart’s growth, according to Lowery-Hart.
“Lockhart is positioned for sustainable growth,” he said. “With the recent annexation, our connection to the area will only grow stronger, allowing us to better understand and meet the evolving needs of the community through the new facility.”
The college plans to develop partnerships with local businesses to offer internships, apprenticeships, and job placement opportunities for Lockhart students. New programs are expected to launch in the spring of 2025.
