SAN MARCOS, Texas (Aug. 31, 2021) – Cooperative Laundry, a robotics-based commercial laundry service company, selected San Marcos as the site of its most recent company expansion. Its initial $20 million capital investment will create more than 100 new jobs for the residents of the region.
The facility will be located at 1225 Fortuna Road in the Whisper development, next to the soon-to-be-open 1.1M square foot Amazon SAT-6 facility. The Cooperative Laundry site is expected to be open and operational by Spring 2022. In addition to good wages, health care benefits will be available on Day 1 for employees at the San Marcos facility, with families eligible after 30 days.
“We are thrilled to be expanding and we could not have selected a better place than San Marcos, Texas,” said Chad Stockton, vice president at Cooperative Laundry. “By providing the most technologically advanced hospitality-based commercial laundry in the Western Hemisphere, our hallmark is serving exceptional quality to our customers. My thanks to the City of San Marcos and Hays County for welcoming us to the community, and to Wadley Donovan Gutshaw Consulting and the Greater San Marcos Partnership for aiding us in the site selection process.”
Cooperative Laundry cited the strength and long-term stability of Texas’ leisure and hospitality industry as reasons for expanding in Central Texas. The company also cited the close commutes to both Austin and San Antonio and the available workforce as additional reasons for choosing a site in the Texas Innovation Corridor.
“These new, good-paying jobs generated by Cooperative Laundry will provide residents across our region the opportunity to improve the quality of their lives,” said Jason Giulietti, president of GSMP. “This announcement marks the 13th company location or expansion here in the Texas Innovation Corridor this fiscal year, once again exhibiting a trend of record-breaking quality growth in this region.”
Cooperative Laundry is the newest business to set roots in the Texas Innovation Corridor. In this fiscal year alone (Oct. 1, 2020 to Sept. 30, 2021), location or expansion announcements were made by innovative companies such as goodblend™ Texas, Iron Ox, and Amazon. Other name brand companies, such as Costco, FedEx and Hershey’s Ice Cream have also announced new operations, hundreds of new jobs, and millions in capital investment dollars.
Last week, the City of San Marcos City Council and Hays County Commissioners Court approved performance-based economic development agreements (Chapter 380 and 381, respectively) with Cooperative Laundry. Over the course of ten years, the agreement is expected to generate $1.3M in property tax revenue to the City of San Marcos and $890,000 in property tax revenue to Hays County.
“As a hub for hospitality, tourism and innovative companies, we gladly welcome Cooperative Laundry to San Marcos,” said Jane Hughson, mayor of San Marcos. “With a well-equipped workforce and strong community support, we look forward to being a long-term partner with this company.”
“We are honored that Cooperative Laundry chose the fastest-growing county in Texas for their first-ever expansion,” said Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra. “We are thrilled with the job opportunities that will soon become available to members of our community.”
First established three years ago in Kearny, New Jersey, the company uses automated technology that not just cleans laundry at an industrial scale for major hotel brands, but also irons, folds, counts and labels items. The company estimates that up to 85% of its laundering processes are done through automation, improving resource efficiency and turn-around time for clients.
Cooperative Laundry is one of only 55 companies in U.S. and 62 globally to be recognized with the Clean Green Certificate by the TRSA Association for Linen, Uniform and Facility Services Industry. The recognition signifies the company’s commitment and delivery on sustainable practices. These practices include the high efficiency of water and energy use, utilization of environmentally friendly detergents, heat reclamation systems, water treatment processes and a lack of hangers in their programs.
“Cooperative Laundry is another excellent opportunity to support and bring high quality employers to our county,” said Hays County Commissioner Debbie Ingalsbe. “Their cutting-edge technologies will serve our business community well and their jobs will provide new economic opportunities for our citizens.”
