Google Fiber officially broke ground on its long-anticipated high-speed internet network in Kyle, marking the company’s first expansion into Hays County and a major milestone for one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas.
The event drew local leaders, business representatives, and residents eager to celebrate what many see as a leap forward in Kyle’s digital infrastructure.
John Michael Cortez, Head of Government and Community Affairs for Google Fiber in Texas, opened the ceremony by highlighting the company’s decade-long presence in Central Texas and the significance of bringing service south from Austin.
“This project represents our first expansion into Hays County, and we couldn’t be more excited to begin that journey here in one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas,” Cortez said. “This groundbreaking isn’t just for the Kyle of today – it’s for the Kyle of tomorrow.”
Cortez praised the strong partnership between Google Fiber and the City of Kyle, crediting city officials and staff for helping the project move forward efficiently. He also announced that construction is ahead of schedule, prompting plans to accelerate the network buildout in 2026.
“The partnership has been so solid and strong that we’ve decided to build out more of this community quicker than we initially anticipated,” he said.
Mayor Travis Mitchell reflected on how far the city has come in improving connectivity. When he was first elected, Mitchell said internet service was one of the most common complaints from residents.
“We struggled with what I would call a monopoly in the city,” Mitchell recalled. “It’s hard to compete with an internet provider that already built out its infrastructure, and for years, we tried to recruit new providers. But who you partner with matters, and Google Fiber has done everything they promised and more.”
Mitchell praised Cortez and the Google Fiber team for their professionalism and commitment to the community.
“They’re accessible, they’re accountable, and they’re going to be here as these projects unfold,” Mitchell said. “This is the kind of partnership that raises the quality of life for our residents and positions Kyle as a leader along the Innovation Corridor between Austin and San Antonio.”
Dee Crisp, Chairman of the Board for the Kyle Area Chamber of Commerce, also spoke at the event, calling Google Fiber’s arrival a significant boost for local businesses and residents alike.
“When we opened our credit union here in 2006, we were one of the few things on the east side of the highway, and we relied on copper lines,” Crisp said. “Today, with Google Fiber coming in, that connectivity will only improve for businesses and families alike.”
Crisp emphasized that reliable high-speed internet is essential for Kyle’s continued economic growth and innovation.
“G Fiber brings more than high-speed internet; it brings opportunity,” he said. “It connects entrepreneurs, businesses, and families with the world.”
The new infrastructure will support Kyle’s expanding economy, which now includes more than 2,000 employers and over 60,000 residents.
In closing, Cortez reiterated Google Fiber’s mission to make fast, reliable, fairly priced internet accessible to every community it serves.
“As Kyle continues to grow and be a vibrant place to live, work, and thrive, we’re excited to contribute to its connected future,” Cortez said before joining local leaders to break ground officially.
